Cream cheese mashed potatoes are the softest, most delicious mashed potatoes ever. If you want a real treat, this is the mashed potatoes recipe you want to make!

If you’ve ever wondered whether you can put cream cheese in mashed potatoes, the answer is a loud and enthusiastic yes. It melts into the hot potatoes, adding richness and a subtle tang that elevates this classic side dish.

Once you try mashed potatoes made this way, you may never go back to the traditional version. They turn out extra creamy, extra fluffy, and downright irresistible — the kind of potatoes that quietly steal the show at the dinner table and have everyone asking what your secret is.

Store, reheat, and freeze

Store: Transfer the cooled potatoes to a covered container and refrigerate for up to 4 days.

Reheat: A microwave works great for reheating mashed potatoes. You can also reheat them gently on the stovetop, adding a splash of water to the pan.

Freeze: Potatoes never freeze well. While you technically can freeze mashed potatoes, their quality will degrade, so I don’t recommend it.

Ingredients

  • 3 lb potatoes (cut into 1-inch pieces)
  • 4 ounces cream cheese (½ a brick)
  • ⅓ cup whipping cream
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • Salt (to taste)

Instructions

  • Add the potatoes to a large pot and cover them with water. Bring the pot to a boil over high heat then reduce the heat to medium-high and continue to boil for 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are soft. Drain the water then return the potatoes to the pot.
    3 lb potatoes
  • Add the cream cheese, whipping cream, and butter and use a potato masher to mash the potatoes. (See notes.) Season to taste with salt (we like about 2 teaspoons) and stir the salt through the potatoes.
4 ounces cream cheese, ⅓ cup whipping cream, 4 tablespoons butter, Salt

Notes

If you mash potatoes too much, they become gluey. Easy does it! For the smoothest mashed potatoes, use a potato ricer then mix the cream cheese, cream, butter, and salt in afterward.

It said sour cream mashed potatoes. There’s no sour cream in the recipe, only whipping cream.Should that be sour cream instead?

In the recipe it said: add whipping cream, but it did not mention which one was used in this recipe.
Is wiping cream used in this recipe sweet or you used ones for cooking.

Whipping cream comes in a carton and is similar to milk only thicker and higher in fat. You can use it to make whipped cream by whisking it with sugar. In this recipe, we simply use it straight out of the carton.

Only frustrated cooks add and add grease and calories to dishes that need nothing more than enhancement and color. leave everything out and start with boiled potatoes in their skin. peel add butter/ milk/ green onion/ and fresh dill and a 1-t/spoon of chicken bouillon white pepper and let steep. cooks have become frustratedly- overzealous with contaminated taste buds. For a creamy texture add a large heaping tablespoon of full bodies whole Yogurt.

I’m curious what made you click on a mashed potatoes with cream cheese recipe if you’re so against cream cheese. Seems like you already have a recipe you enjoy so perhaps you should stick with that rather than putting other people down.

You may not know that your recioe is a variation of “Make Ahead Mashed Potatoes,” which contains cream cheese and sour cream and has been in community cookbooks for years and years! It is yummy, and I trust yours is too.
