Hot honey sweet potatoes are AMAZING! Sweet potatoes are cut into circles and then roasted to caramelized perfection. Then they’re topped with toasted pecans, a little thyme, and lots of spicy hot honey.

Hot honey sweet potatoes

Roasted sweet potatoes absolutely smothered in spicy hot honey and sprinkled with pecans and fresh thyme is heaven on a plate. You’ll find all the good flavors here – sweet and creamy sweet potatoes with crispy edges, crunchy toasted pecans, spicy honey, a little earthy thyme, and some warm cinnamon to bring it all together.

These roasted sweet potato slices put on an incredible show at Thanksgiving or Christmas. But they’re easy enough to make for dinner all fall and winter long.

How to make roasted sweet potatoes with hot honey

Hot honey sweet potatoes is a simple recipe that will give you a big bang for your buck. Here’s how to make them:

  1. Toss sweet potato rounds with butter, oil, salt, pepper, and cinnamon. Then lay them out in a single layer on a baking sheet and roast them until they are wonderfully dark in spots.
  2. Now sprinkle some pecans over the top and put them back into the oven to toast the nuts.
  3. The final step is drizzling the gorgeous sweet potatoes with hot honey (store-bought or homemade with 2 ingredients!) and sprinkling them with thyme.

Ingredient notes

Sweet potatoes – Look for medium-sized sweet potatoes that are similar in diameter.

Butter + olive oil – The combination gives the most flavor and the best browning to the sweet potatoes.

Sea salt, pepper, and cinnamon – Brings out the flavor of the sweet potatoes. If you only have table salt, use half the amount.

Pecans – Walnuts make a nice substitute. Chopped almonds or pistachios are good, too!

Hot honey – You can make your own with our hot honey recipe (2 ingredients and only minutes to make!) or you can use store-bought.

Thyme – A little fresh thyme sprinkled on at the very end adds a wonderful earthy flavor to the hot honey sweet potatoes and brings a pop of color to the serving plate.

Recipe FAQs

Are these sweet potatoes spicy?

They definitely have a bit of a kick to them, but they’re not crazy spicy. If you have different tastes at the table, you can serve the hot honey on the side and let each person decide how much they want. And regular honey is a great treat for the little ones at the table.

Do I have to use pecans?

Pecans add a wonderful crunch that complements the creamy sweet potatoes well, so we don’t recommend omitting them. But walnuts, pistachios, or chopped almonds can be substituted.

Can I make these in advance?

These taste best if cooked fresh. If you’re serving these at a big dinner and want to prep ahead of time, make the honey and prep the sweet potatoes, and have them ready to go on the baking sheet. Just remember not to season them until they are ready to go into the oven – putting the seasonings in a little dish on top of the potatoes will help you remember to season them!

What to serve with hot honey sweet potatoes

While you can easily serve these roasted sweet potatoes year-round next to some crispy chicken thighs or juicy baked pork chops, they really shine on your holiday table. Here are a few other holiday recipes that go well with these hot honey sweet potatoes:

  • Crispy Parmesan Brussels Sprouts

Hot honey sweet potatoes are AMAZING! Sweet potatoes are cut into circles then roasted to caramelized perfection. Then they're topped with toasted pecans, a little thyme, and lots of spicy hot honey.
6

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ lb sweet potatoes (peeled and sliced into 1" thick rounds)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ cup pecans
  • ¼ cup hot honey (store-bought or recipe below)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme

The Hot Honey

  • ¼ cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon chili flakes
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Take out your darkest colored baking sheet. (The darker the sheet the more color you'll get on the sweet potatoes.)
  • Place the sweet potatoes in the middle of the baking sheet and pour the butter, oil, salt, pepper, and cinnamon over the top. Mix well (hands work best for this job) then spread the sweet potatoes out in a single layer.
1 ½ lb sweet potatoes, 2 tablespoons melted butter, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1 teaspoon sea salt, 1 teaspoon black pepper, ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Roast the sweet potatoes for 35 minutes, or until they are soft and starting to brown on top. Sprinkle the pecans over the top and return the baking sheet to the oven for 5-7 minutes, until the pecans are golden and smell fragrant.
    ½ cup pecans
  • Serve the sweet potatoes drizzled with hot honey and thyme.
¼ cup hot honey, 1 teaspoon fresh thyme

Hot Honey

  • Mix the honey, chili flakes, and hot sauce in a small pan over medium heat. Heat the honey until it just starts to simmer then remove it from the heat and let it infuse for 5 minutes.
¼ cup honey, 1 teaspoon chili flakes, 1 teaspoon hot sauce
  • Strain the honey through a fine-mesh sieve.

Yum! Yum! Yum! Delicious with the broiled walleye.

I’m not a super big sweet potato fan, but this made me a believer.

Perfect on a winter day.

Okay this was absolutely amazing indeed! A fantastic side dish to roast chicken, so creamy and flavourful I didn’t need to add any sauce or mayo to my plate, which is usually a must with rotisserie chicken that is a little dry. This was the perfect side really.
