Everyone needs a go-to easy and versatile dip recipe – and this is about to become yours! I’ve been making this chip dip for years, and anyone who tries it asks for the recipe. Let me show you how to make the best chip dip ever.

There’s something magical about the combination of a creamy, herbaceous dip with salty, savory chips. They balance each other out perfectly – crisp meets creamy, and it’s always a hit. What I love most about this chip dip is how unassuming it is. I’ve amused myself more than once by setting it out at a gathering and watching the reactions unfold.
The first person dips a chip, takes a bite, and immediately comments on how delicious it is. Then a second and third person try it, and before you know it, everyone’s crowding around the bowl, asking for the recipe. Even though it’s ridiculously easy to make, the fresh herbs and garlic flavor give it that extra something special that keeps everyone coming back for more.
This chip dip tastes better after letting it sit because the flavors have time to come together. The recipe instructions recommend letting it sit for at least 30 minutes before serving. If you’re having a party or planning to enjoy it on movie night or by the pool, prepare it the day before. Just make sure it’s stored in a covered container or a bowl covered tightly with wrap – I like to use these beeswax wraps.
Take this dip to the next level by serving it with my homemade potato chips!
Ingredients for the best easy chip dip
This recipe uses just a few ingredients you’re likely to have on hand. To make it, you’ll need:
- Sour cream + mayonnaise – this gives the dip deliciously creamy.
- Lemon juice – helps to brighten the flavor.
- Garlic + onion powder – adds a wonderful savory flavor. To get a little fancier, use finely minced garlic clove and some minced chive.
- Parsley + dill – we use the dried version because we always have them on hand, but fresh is nice too!
- Salt + pepper – just a little helps to bring out the flavor of the other ingredients.

How to serve chip dip
Whether it’s for a special celebration, holiday, movie night, picnic, or just lounging by the pool, this chip dip is so versatile. Serving it alongside crunchy salty chips might be the classic combination but there are endless ways to enjoy this delicious fuss-free creamy dip:

Love the flavor, easy to mix. I cut recipe in half only because it was for myself. It was plenty. Just wondering how long can it be refrigerated before spoiling?
Glad you enjoyed it! Cutting it in half was a smart move for a solo snack. It should keep well in the fridge for at least 4–5 days—just give it a stir before serving!
Very good! Much more tasty than the store bought chip dip! It’s a keeper here. I’ll share with my kids and friends.
I’m thrilled you loved it—and even better that it beats store-bought! Sharing with kids and friends is the highest compliment. Thanks so much! 🎉🥳
Mayo and sour cream last a long time in the fridge, lemon juice makes it last even longer because it prevents bacterial growth, and salt is a preservative. I am pretty sure the other spices don’t really go bad, so why on earth would I only be able to keep this in the fridge for 2-3 days? I am pretty sure it will be good for weeks, if not longer.
You’re probably right. I like to err on the side of caution as I don’t want anyone getting ill.
Decent but not great
Really good recipe
Thanks, Shelley!
My grandson shared this recipe with. Taste more flavorful than store bought or powder mix. It’s a keeper
Thanks, Libby!!
Love it and so simple to put together.
Love this recipe. Did add a few goodies based on personal taste. Added one can of minced clams, one tsp of dried chives and a pinch of red pepper flakes. I made another batch with minced shrimp and chopped cooked spinach without the clams. All are a big hit with everyone. Thanks for sharing your recipe. It’s nice that it can go together with basic pantry and fridge staples.
I love all the variations!!
A very fast and easy dip for some leftover vegetables tonight. The family loved it.
I’m so happy it was a hit!
Yummm!!!
Couldn’t be easier or simpler. Hits all the taste buds. I did add just a touch more dill due to personal preference. Love that basically everything needed to make it is already on hand.
I’m so happy to hear you enjoyed the recipe!
I just made but I changed garlic powder to crushed garlic and did not have sour cream so I used yogurt. I will try sour cream when I go grocery shopping. I only made the recipe for 2 but will increase to four. What great tasting dip. Now if I could only find one as good as this for dill pickle. I will put green onion cut up on top next time.
A little strong tasting for us; I’ll cut back on the onion powder the next time. Good otherwise and very quick.
What an easy and delicious chip dip. My go-to for now on! Why spend money on pre-made dip when you can easily whip this up with staples from your kitchen in 5 minutes?!
Fast, easy and perfect chip dip
Easy to throw together and surprisingly delicious! Great recipe
Just tried it! It is very good! Way easier than me having to go to the store to buy dip and tastes better than store bought too!
Wow – THE best chip dip ever !!
