What's the difference between a Moscow mule and a gin mule?
A mule is any drink that has a mix of ginger ale or ginger beer, citrus, and one of the six primary types of hard liquor (also known as a base liquor).
A Moscow mule is traditionally made with vodka, ginger beer, fresh lime juice, and served in a copper mug. A gin mule, on the other hand, has all the same ingredients, with the exception of swapping vodka for gin.
A good vodka has very little flavor, so in a Moscow mule the predominant flavors will come from the other ingredients. If you make a Moscow mule with gin you will be adding a stronger herbal taste to the beverage. But don't worry, that classic citrus-ginger flavor will still shine through in a gin mule.
Gin mule ingredients
Just 5 minutes and 3 ingredients (plus more fun stuff for garnishing, if you wish) and you'll sippin' on a crisp gin mule! Here's what you need for this gin mule recipe:
- Gin: 2 ounces of your favorite gin go into this mule.
- Lime juice: This is where the citrus pop comes from, so when making a gin mule go for freshly squeezed lime juice. The bottled stuff just doesn't taste the same. 1 ounce of lime juice will do, or half a lime.
- Ginger beer: You can find ginger beer in the beverage section of most local grocery stores. It's a bubbly drink, with a sharp ginger taste. Despite its name, ginger beer usually doesn't contain any alcohol. You'll need 4 ounces for this recipe.
- Garnishes: It's fun to garnish your gin mule with pops of flavor, like fresh mint leaves, a mint sprig, fresh ginger shavings, or lime wedges/circles. These are optional, but they do make the drink look even more appealing!
