October is when dinner gets properly cozy. The grill goes away, the slow cooker comes back out, and suddenly I want something warm and deeply satisfying waiting for me when I walk through the door. This is the list for that.

A bowl of chicken and dumplings stew with vegetables and a spoon, overlaid with the text dinners to eat in october..

October dinners have a different energy than any other month. There’s something about the cold creeping in that makes me want to cook low and slow, fill the kitchen with good smells, and eat something that genuinely warms you from the inside. This list is all about that feeling. Whether it’s a hands-off slow cooker dinner or a big pot of something rich and deeply spiced, these are the recipes that make me actually look forward to the dark evenings.

There’s also room here for the nights when you don’t have an hour to spare. Some of the best October dinners come together fast but still taste like you really cooked. Creamy, comforting, and completely satisfying after a long day. That balance of effortless and cozy is exactly what this month calls for.

The whole list leans into the season with warming spices, hearty ingredients, and that unmistakable feeling of settling in. October is also a great time to try something a little outside your usual rotation. You might just find a new favorite.

This creamy chicken stew with dumplings is comfort food at its best. The deliciously creamy chicken and vegetable stew is topped with easy homemade dumplings that are light and fluffy. You don't want to miss this easy one-pot dinner!

A skillet featuring Coq au Vin-style chicken drumsticks with bacon, mushrooms, onions, and herbs in a rich sauce.
Julia Child Coq Au Vin Recipe
Julia Child's Coq Au Vin is undeniably the best. This recipe sticks very much to the original, only minorly changing the ingredients and cooking method to bring it in line with the times. While Coq au Vin (or chicken in wine) might sound fancy, it is really just a simple French chicken stew that anyone can master. Don't be intimidated, this recipe is very easy to follow.

Indian-Inspired Pumpkin Curry with Apples and Pecans
Roasted winter squash and toasted pecans in a creamy coconut pumpkin sauce, with apples worked in two ways so the curry keeps its texture. I love this vegetarian dinner for cool nights, served over rice with naan on the side.

A plate with sliced pork tenderloin, roasted fall veggies like sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, and parsnips, walnuts and herbs—served with a fork, knife, glass of water, and a small bowl of walnuts for a cozy autumn dinner.
Autumn Pork Tenderloin Dinner with Roasted Fall Veggies
I make this autumn pork tenderloin every year when the weather cools, and it’s the perfect cozy sheet pan dinner. The tender pork, roasted fall veggies, toasted walnuts, and sage garlic butter make it irresistibly delicious and full of comforting flavor.

Pork Rib Stew in a bowl with a spoon
Pork Rib Stew Recipe
Warm, comforting, hearty pork rib stew is the perfect bowl to curl up with, share at the cabin, or embrace on a chilly Sunday afternoon. The slow cooked pork ribs in red wine, crushed tomatoes, and beef stock provides the base for this stew. Throw in some potatoes, onion, carrots, and peas and you have yourself a delicious dinner.

Curried Pumpkin Soup Recipe
When the days start shortening, it signifies the arrival of soup season. This warm and comforting curried pumpkin soup is a fall classic with a delicious, curried twist – but the real star of this show is the warming maple and ginger caramelized onions!

I'm Kristen, and I've been developing recipes at The Endless Meal since 2011, back when I was working as a nurse and running an underground supper club on the side. These days over a million readers visit each month for recipes built around big, bold flavor, crispy edges, jammy sauces, and craveable dinners. I test every recipe in my own kitchen in Squamish, BC, often with my husband and daughter as my first taste testers.
