4 juicy grilled chicken breast on a plate with tasty grill marks all over them.

Let’s hear it for easy, delicious grilled chicken breast recipes — especially this one. It’s an all-time favorite around here and the recipe we make on repeat all summer long. The chicken turns out flavorful and reliably juicy every single time, which is really all I ask of a grilled chicken dinner.

This is the kind of recipe I keep in my back pocket for nights when I need dinner on the table fast or just don’t feel like thinking too hard. The answer is always these grilled chicken breasts. Once you make them, you’ll find yourself coming back to them again and again. Serve them with grilled veggies and a big salad, and dinner is done.

What makes this recipe a winner is its simplicity and effectiveness. The wet spice rub — made with pantry staples you likely already have — adds tons of flavor, and the method ensures the lean chicken breasts stay juicy instead of drying out on the grill. It’s proof that grilled chicken can be both easy and exciting.

If you’d like a BBQ sauce-forward recipe, try my grilled BBQ chicken!

Serving suggestions

I like to serve grilled chicken with a simple salad and some grilled veggies. Here are a few of our favorites:

Grilled veggies

  • Grilled Maple Dijon Carrots
  • Grilled Garlic Butter Mushrooms
  • Smoky Parmesan Corn on the Cobb

Grilled potatoes

  • Grilled Smashed Potato Salad with Chive Lemon Yogurt
  • Grilled Potato Salad with Scallion Pesto

Once the weather cools down, make sure to check out our perfect baked chicken breast recipe. It’s the oven baked version of this one and a great way to keep enjoying the flavors of this grilled chicken breast all year long.

Ingredients

  • 5 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons paprika
  • 1 tablespoon EACH: onion powder and garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon EACH: oregano, salt, and pepper
  • 4 boneless chicken breasts

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix together the olive oil, apple cider vinegar, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, oregano, salt, and pepper. It will be a thick paste.
5 tablespoons olive oil, 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons paprika, 1 tablespoon EACH: onion powder and garlic powder, 1 teaspoon EACH: oregano, salt, and pepper
  • Add the boneless chicken breasts to the bowl and mix well so they are completely coated in the marinade. Let them marinate while your BBQ heats up, or up to 8 hours.

  • Preheat your BBQ to medium-high heat and oil the grates well. (Or use a grill mat for easy cleanup.) Grill the chicken breasts for 9 minutes on each side, or until they reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Remove them from the grill and let them rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

How long to grill chicken breast:
The key to juicy grilled chicken breasts is simple: don’t overcook them. Chicken breast is very lean, and if it stays on the grill too long, it quickly dries out and turns tough.
The most reliable way to know when your chicken is done is to use an instant-read meat thermometer. Chicken is perfectly cooked at an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit, and checking the temperature helps you avoid overcooking every time.
As a general guideline, most chicken breasts are ready after about 18 minutes on a medium-high grill. Smaller breasts may need a couple of minutes less, while larger ones may need a bit more. I like to grill them for about 9 minutes, flip them, cook for another 7 minutes, then check the temperature. This method keeps the chicken juicy and takes the guesswork out of grilling.

Is this recipe using one tablespoon of Garlic powder and one tablespoon of onion powder or is it one half tablespoon of each?

Hi Greg! Sorry for that confusion. It’s 1 tablespoon of each. I’ve updated the recipe so hopefully it’s not as confusing.

Forgot to take a pic but it turned out absolutely delicious. I was running short on time so next time I will let it marinate for longer but the whole family devoured it. Will definitely make again!

This is fabulous. Chicken was nice and tender after an hour of marinading. So happy you eliminated the sugar, it is NOT necessary. Thank you for sharing this.

After a bit of time researching the perfect grilled bbq chicken recipe that didn’t require soy sauce/ketchup/mustard/liquid smoke, or anything else that was processed ahead of time, I was THRILLED to come across this gem! (In my family we have to watch both sugar AND sodium intake each day.)

Even better though, this recipe was a HIT! It’s delicious. Great ingredients, great flavor, great instructions. I give this one all the stars!

Hi Kristen, I don’t know if any one else is having the same problem but I am unable to PIN recipes from your website or recipe pages. I have tried using the link from your newsletter and also by going directly to your website. I have used every “Pin” symbol and every picture to no avail.
It looks like it’s going to work but when I choose “Save”, the image disappears. The worse thing is, it is only your links and website that appear to be affected.
I don’t know if there is anything you can do but if you can fix it, it would be wonderful!
Thank you for your newsletter and recipes. I have enjoyed all the recipes I have tried and I would like to be able to Pin more.
All the best
Graham
