Celebrate Pride with these delicious rainbow Pride cookies! Our soft sugar cookie dough is dyed rainbow colors and baked into cookies. Make a big batch to share with all your friends!

Rainbow Pride Cookies on a plate

I’ve long been an LGBTIQ+ ally. Many of my closest friends, my chosen family, are gay. The recipe for these Pride cookies was developed years ago when I was asked to bring a dessert to a Pride brunch party. I love mixing the rainbow flag colors together to make a colorful tie-dyed cookie.

I start by making a basic sugar cookie dough. Then I divide it into six portions and dye them the rainbow colors. I make these pretty rainbow Pride cookies by sticking a little bit of each color together.

Pride month is usually celebrated in June, but you can celebrate love and diversity all year round with these rainbow cookies.

Happy Pride! 🏳️‍🌈

What do the colors on the Pride flag represent?

The most recognized Pride flag includes six colors that mean:

  1. Red: Life
  2. Orange: Healing
  3. Yellow: Sunshine
  4. Green: Nature
  5. Indigo: Harmony
  6. Violet: Soul

In 2018, artist Daniel Quasar created the Progress Pride flag, which features the well-known six colors and adds black and brown stripes for LGBTIQ+ people of color, as well as blue, pink, and white stripes from the trans flag.

If you’d like these Pride cookies to be all-inclusive, add all 11 colors to the mix!

Tip for making round cookies

I have a tip for making your cookies perfectly round. As soon as they come out of the oven, put a glass that is slightly bigger than a cookie over top of it and give it a little swirl. It will form it into a perfectly round cookie. A martini glass works great for large cookies while a drinking glass works for medium-sized cookies.

Recipe FAQs

What food coloring should I use?

For the most vibrant color, I recommend using a good-quality brand. My top picks are Wilton and Americolor.

How long do these cookies last?

These Pride cookies will keep well for 3-4 days in a sealed container.

Where did you get the idea to make these fun cookies?

The inspiration for these Pride cookies came from Katrina over at In Katrina’s Kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 cup butter (at room temperature)
  • ½ cup brown sugar (packed )
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 large eggs
  • Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple food coloring

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt.
2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoons baking powder, ½ teaspoon sea salt

  • In a large bowl, use an electric beater to beat the butter and both sugars until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add the egg and vanilla and beat to combine.
1 cup butter, ½ cup brown sugar, ½ cup granulated sugar, 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract, 1 large eggs
    image for recipe instruction
  • Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and beat, scraping the sides of the bowl a few times with a rubber spatula, until a stiff dough forms.

  • Divide the dough into 6 small bowls. Add a few drops of the food coloring to the bowls, one color per bowl, and stir until the color is incorporated.
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple food coloring
    image for recipe instruction
  • Working with one color at a time put 1 teaspoon of the dough on 9 evenly spaced spots on one of the baking sheets. Next, put another teaspoon of another color of dough so it touches the first color. Repeat until each cookie has all 6 colors.

  • Bake the cookies for 9-10 minutes. Make sure not to overcook them or the colors will start to fade. To make the cookies perfectly round, as soon as they come out of the oven, place a cup slightly larger than the cookie over the top and swirl it around gently. Transfer the cookies to a cooling rack and let them cook completely before you store them.

Notes

If the dough feels a bit sticky, it’s likely that it’s too warm. This can happen as it takes a bit of time to color the dough and piece together the cookies. If it’s sticky, pop the unbaked cookies into your fridge for 10 minutes.
