I've made us some crispy apple chips! Seriously, these things are so good. They almost taste like they should be bad for you but I swear to you they're not. They're made up entirely of apples tossed with a little lemon juice and cinnamon. Yep, that's it. Don't you love it when food tastes good, is easy to make, AND is healthy for you, too? Makes me want to do a 1990's style fist pump while yelling, “SCORE!”

Eat these apple chips

  • As an after school snack.
  • While watching Netflix. Move over popcorn!
  • Scooping your favorite sweet dip. I'm looking at you, thick vanilla yogurt.
  • Crumbled on top of granola.
  • Literally all the time and everywhere.

How to make apple chips

Apple chips are easy to make but they do require some patience. About 2 hours of patience, to be exact. Don't worry though, most of that time is hands-off so you can set an alarm then distract yourself playing with the kids, cleaning the house, or going down a Pinterest rabbit hole.

In this baked apple chips recipe, you dehydrate the apple slices in your oven on low heat. If you try to rush the process, they will cook then burn. Let's not do that.

  1. Start by thinly slicing the apples. You want them to be about 1/8 inch thick. Using a mandoline is an easy way to make sure all the slices are the same thickness. A sharp knife does the trick, too.
  2. Now toss the apple slices with a little lemon juice and cinnamon and lay them on a baking sheet. Don't overlap them, but nestle them as close together as you can. They'll shrink a lot as they dry.
  3. Pop them into your oven at 225 degrees Fahrenheit. Set an alarm for 2 hours then walk away.
  4. When your alarm starts beeping, take one of the apple chips out of the oven. Let it cool on your counter for 5 minutes. If it's crispy, remove the rest of the apple chips. If not, let them stay in the oven until they're crisp. The exact time will vary a little depending on what kind of apples you use and how thin you sliced them.

What kind of apples should I use?

Crisp apples work the best. Ambrosia apples, Honeycrisp, Fuji, Pink Lady, and Gala apples are my favorites.

All of these varieties are on the sweeter side so you'll end up with sweeter apple chips.

They're also my favorite apples for snacking on so I almost always have some around the house. Are you the same?

Ingredients

  • 4 apples
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 225 degrees. Line your baking sheets with parchment paper. Cut the apples crosswise into thin rounds about ⅛ inch thick. Don't worry about removing the seeds; they'll shrivel up and fall out as they cook.
    4 apples
  • Toss the apple slices in the lemon juice and sprinkle the cinnamon over top and toss to coat. Lay the apples in a single layer on the baking sheets. It is ok if they are very close together.
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Bake for 2 hours, rotating the baking sheets halfway through. (Move the baking sheet on the top rack to the bottom and the bottom one to the top.)
  • Remove one apple chip from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes. If it is crisp, remove all the apple chips. If not, put it back into the oven until they are crisp. Check on them every 15 mintues. The total time will vary depending on what kind of apples you use and how thin they're sliced.
  • Let the apple chips cool completely before storing them in a resealable container.

Notes

I highly recommend you use fresh squeezed lemon juice. The stuff in the squeeze bottles has a funny flavor and will be noticeable in this recipe.
