How Starting a Blog Can Change Your Life
Starting a blog has completely changed my life, and I know it can do the same for you, too. If you want to really love your life, you want to start a blog.
The title might seem a bit over dramatic. Anytime I hear someone say, “… can change your life.” I become a little skeptical. It feels sales-y. I get it.
The thing is, starting a blog changed MY life. Since I started my blog 4 1/2 years ago, my life has whipped me around 180 degrees. It's turned me on my head, and set me straight again.
Before I started my blog I was working in a job I didn't love. It felt draining, like it was sucking the life right out of me. Sound familiar? I can feel your pain; it's not fun.
Why I started my blog
On a whim, I started The Endless Meal. I wish I could tell you that I had some big plan and knew exactly what I was doing. If I did, I'd be lying to you. I had NO IDEA what I was doing. I didn't know the difference between WordPress. com and WordPress.org. I didn't know what hosting was, let alone how to set it up. If you said HTML or CSS or PHP to me I would have looked at you like you were speaking gibberish. Heck, I didn't even have a camera to take pictures with when I started. The first pics on TEM were taken with a super high-tech iPhone 3G. Oh ya, they were some awesome shots.
What I did know is that I wanted a change. I wanted a creative outlet. I got that, and so much more.
How has starting a blog changed my life?
Here's what my average day looks like:
- I get up without an alarm telling me to. If that's at 6:30, that's ok. If it's at 8:00, that's also ok. Coffee. Always coffee.
- I answer some emails and comments and connect with readers.
- I brainstorm. I love this part! I think about all the recipes that I want to share with you guys. I figure out healthy twists on old classics and dream up new combos.
- I get to hang out in my kitchen, cooking and recipe testing (aka: eating delicious food.)
- I take photos and create new blog posts.
- I spend some time learning new things about blogging and how I can better connect with readers.
Basically, I spend the day doing super awesome things that I totally love. Before I started blogging my average day did NOT look this way.
What was it like starting a blog?
From day one, I became obsessed about everything blog related. I've never been one to something half-assed, so I dove in blind, head first. It was sink or swim, my friend. I did a lot of flailing around and gasping for air the first few year. Not going lie!
There were days when I was so frustrated it was all but a miracle that I didn't throw my computer across the room. Days where I was almost in tears because I couldn't figure something out. Days where I would have paid a million bucks (if I had it!) for someone to help me out. You guys, it was bad.
If I wasn't so stubborn I'd probably have given up. But I kept going, and learning and eventually figured it out.
Thinking back on that first year was what originally inspired me to create #OhMyBlog. I knew I couldn't be the only one out there who wanted to start a blog but didn't have a clue where to begin. I didn't want anyone else to have to struggle the way I did. #NotFunAtAll
I don't want YOU to have to struggle the way I did. Seriously, there's no need. I've spent the time weeding through all the mess of information out there and I want to share it with you.
