Ingredients notes
The flavor profile of this sesame orange chicken is citrusy, sweet, tangy, umami, and nutty! It's a delicious harmony of tastes that balance and complement each other. Gather these ingredients:
- Chicken: Use boneless and skinless chicken thighs.
- Black sesame seeds:Ā You can find these in some grocery stores, sometimes in the bulk sections. Otherwise, check health food stores, Asian grocers, specialty food markets, or online. Or swap them for regular white sesame seeds.
- Other ingredients: Cornstarch, spray oil, and cilantro.
- Orange sauce: Honey, orange juice and orange zest, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, and a garlic clove.
How to make sesame orange chicken
This orange sesame chicken recipe only takes ten minutes of prep ā the rest is hands-off time as you let the oven do its thing! Simply bake the chicken, whip up the sauce, and set it to broil. Here's the instructions:
- Prep chicken: Mix the sesame seeds and cornstarch in a bowl. Toss the chicken into the cornstarch in batches. Make sure it's coated on all sides, then lay the chicken on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Spray the top with oil and bake until they're crispy!
- Make sauce: Stir all the sauce ingredients together in a small pot and let it reach a boil. It'll thicken up enough to coat the back of a spoon.
- Coat chicken: Take the chicken out of the oven and douse each one with a liberal amount of sauce. Turn your oven to broil and put the chicken back in so the sauce gets sticky and glazy. Sprinkle on some cilantro and enjoy!
Black sesame seeds
Have you tried black sesame seeds before? Curious if they taste any different? Black sesame seeds do taste a bit different from regular (white) sesame seeds. They tend to taste a little stronger and nuttier, with a very slight bitterness ā it's a subtle difference, but noticeable.
Sesame seeds are also loaded with nutrition ā they're rich in healthy fats, protein, fiber, vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals. They're small but mighty!
You can find them in a variety of places. Check your local supermarket; sometimes, they're in the bulk section. Specialty food stores, health food stores, or Asian grocers can also have them. Otherwise, you can find them online.
In a pinch, regular sesame seeds work great, too! You can toast them for a deeper, nuttier flavor.
What to serve with orange sesame chicken
A simple and delicious way to serve this up is with some steaming basmati rice (or cauliflower rice!) with orange slices and vegetables, like roasted broccoli or some spicy long beans.
You can also mix it up and detour from classic rice, and make a pineapple fried rice or serve it over some sesame zoodles (zucchini noodles), or incorporate it into sesame chicken bowls!
Other side dishes that complement the flavors include a ramen noodle salad or Asian slaw.

I used flour rather than tapioca flour.
I tripled the sauce. Reserved 1/4 cup +/- to make gravy by adding 1 Tablespoon cornstarch (or flour) to thicken and served on the side.
