Product Description
From the Manufacturer
The Nikon D5100 offers a host of new photographic and video tools that deliver superior performance and exceptional image quality with surprising versatility. With 16.2 megapixels, a swivel Vari-Angle LCD monitor, full HD movie capabilities, new EFFECTS Mode and new HDR setting, you hold the power and performance to capture beautiful moments and the freedom to get creative.
Vari-angle LCD Monitor
Creativity from any point of view
Take pictures or record movies from a unique viewpoint, the D5100’s 3.0 inch, super sharp, 921,000-dot Vari-angle LCD monitor allows for versatile high quality viewing and playback. Explore every angle, with overhead shots, waist level candids, ground level and fun self portraits; you will never miss a shot. This Vari-angle monitor allows you to be creative from any point of view.
Effects Mode
More fun and artistic pictures and movies
The D5100 incorporates an amazing array of special effects for use when taking still pictures or recording D-Movie Full HD movies. Selective Color isolates any color within the scene, capture details in places too dark for your own eyes using Night Vision, create bright, glowing images filled with atmosphere with High Key, emphasize the mood of a scene using Low Key, Miniature Effect makes a scene look like a miniature scale model and Color Sketch creates color outlines of the subject that are played back as a series of stills in a slide show.
Tell better stories
Full HD 1080p D-Movie with Sound
The D5100 delivers exceptionally high-quality movie performance due to its full HD capability while the latest in full-time autofocus takes the guess work out of tracking your subjects while in motion. Effortless moviemaking is at your fingertip thanks to D5100’s ergonomically placed Live View and Movie start button. Your D-Movies will come to life thanks to D5100’s sound recording capability — get stereo sound with Nikon’s optional ME-1 Stereo Microphone.
HDR (High Dynamic Range)
Exquisite detail in highlight and shadow
In scenes with extreme contrasts, such as bright, sunlit clouds and a foreground deep in shadow, it was once quite difficult to render the textures of both equally. Not any more. D5100 combines two exposures to create an image revealing an extremely wide dynamic range, but with less noise and richer color gradation than ever before.
Stunning image quality
Image quality in a class of its own
Incorporating the latest Nikon D-SLR technologies such as the 16.2MP DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 2 image processing engine, the D5100 delivers outstanding image quality. Its CMOS sensor offers a remarkably wide ISO range (ISO 100 to 6400) with reduced noise which enables you to shoot at faster shutter speeds and capture scenes and subjects with less blur. Handheld shooting and full HD movies come out looking great even in low light.
Speed and performance that delivers
With high-speed continuous shooting at approx. 4 frames per second, you’ll never miss a moment and with D5100’s large optical viewfinder providing accurate and realistic composition, you’ll get a precise view and focus in every situation.
Capture your subjects precisely
D5100’s 11-point AF system provides flexibility to compose the shot you want ensuring your subject is captured sharply wherever it’s located in the frame. Working together with the Scene Recognition System, the camera can keep your main subject in focus even if the composition changes using Nikon’s exclusive 3D-tracking.
Nikon D5100 In-depth Review by dpreview.com
Sitting between the entry-level D3100 and the upper mid-level D7000, the D5100 is a hard camera to categorise. It combines the user-friendly ergonomics of the D3100 with the impressive 16MP CMOS sensor of the D7000, but throws in a couple of neat tricks of its own, including an articulated LCD screen, and a set of all-new 'Effects' modes. So is the Nikon D5100 just an entry-level camera with delusions of grandeur, or is it a wolf in sheep's clothing?Customer reviews

The Nikon D5100 felt great. It fit in my hand perfectly, and was very comfortable. My wife loves it too, and has no problems handling the camera. The focusing is extremely fast, which enables us to take quick pictures with great results. We did something different with our purchase, which we were very happy with. Rather than the stock lenses (18-55 and 70-300mm lenses) we purchased the camera/body-only, a Nikkor AF-S 50mm/f1.8G prime lens Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S NIKKOR FX Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras , and the Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM IF Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM IF Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras lenses.
The Sigma lens gives us everything we need - the ability to zoom in and get close ups from far away, or the ability to get a wide shot. The 50mm prime lens is awesome. It is perfect for shots in dark rooms or at weddings, and we've used it to take portrait/family type shots too.
The D5100 is fantastic. We could not be happier. The pictures are so clear, the focusing is so quick, and the menus on the camera are very easy to navigate through. Overall, I give this camera a 10/10.
Sidenote - we also purchased the AmazonBasics Backpack AmazonBasics Backpack for SLR Cameras and Accessories-Black to store the camera/equipment in. The bag fits everything, is comfortable to carry, and will not tip over when you set it down. I highly recommend it.
This $650 camera has a sensor that is reputed to be Nikon's best at the moment, except possibly the one in the top-of-the-line D3 that sells for 7-8 times more money. I am shooting RAW +jpeg, and tweaking the RAW files in Adobe Lightroom 3. (I'm still learning my way around in the world of digital postprocessing. Luckily, Lightroom's controls are very intuitive for somebody who has done darkroom work.)
Jpeg shooters should look into fine tuning the camera's Picture controls; you can find many interesting presets on the internet to tune the look. The 6-7 default modes are fine too, but you can add about 9-10 other "looks." Nikon's website has a nice tutorial on developing a custom "look" for your photos. You should also set the camera to correct lens distortions of various types.
The image quality in the D5100 is quite incredible up to 800ASA, and rivals the best color films I have shot over the years. (This was not true for my old D40.) The quality drops a bit at 1600ASA, and drops more noticeably at higher speeds. One can still get usable snapshots at 3200 ASA.
For the price this camera is an amazing deal. I also bought the 18-105 nikkor, and the 55-200nikkor (at $100 off with the Nikon promotion, it was too good to pass up). I have tested these lenses against my old manual focus nikkor (eg the 50/1.8 AIS) and find their image quality to be similar. The new lenses have a much higher minimum aperture than the old MF lenses, but on other hand have VR image stabilization, which allows a couple more stops of handholding ability. Thus I find little need to bring out the old manual focus lenses (except to get the occasional portrait with blurred background).
Bottom line: I am really really excited about the image quality this camera gives with fairly inexpensive kit lenses, something we could only dream of 10 years ago.
Top reviews from other countries
The D5100 is superior to the Canon D600 in almost all respects. One major reason to go for the Nikon over Canon is the auto focus motor is built-in the lens rather than the camera body. Yes this makes the lens more expensive but it makes a good difference as per my research to have the AF motor in the lens.
D3200 (D3300 also) is extremely close to the D5100 but only reason to not go for the D3200 though it is the newer model is that it does not have the flip screen which I fell is extremely necessary. I have used flip as well as fixed screens in the past and I know how valuable it is to have a flip screen. Though the D3200 has more megapixel than the D5100 it barely makes a difference in the picture quality. In fact the D5100 has a slightly larger sensor size than the D3200 which does make a difference and covers up the megapixel gap.
D5200 is slightly better than the D5100 but not so much better to pay the huge price difference. However the D5100 has a slightly larger sensor size, longer battery life and it is slightly smaller. For the price difference of 11-12k I can get a good prime lens.
In terms of lens for the D5100, I went for the Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD Aspherical IF Macro Zoom Lens which gives me the flexibility to shoot close ups as well as zoom without having to change the lens every time. Will invest in a prime lens as and when I feel the need. For now loving and enjoying the awesome pictures with my D5100 with the Tamron 18-200mm lens.
Cheers!!
